Περίληψη

After we analyze, historically and from the side of the science of Teaching, the catalytic role played by the school book from the Middle Ages to the present day in the educational systems of most – mainly western – countries, we provide an overview of the research projects and studies relating to school books, we comment on the perceptions, prevailing among a substantial portion of the scientific community, about the important socializing effect of school books on students through the content of the texts included in their pages, and, finally, we suggest some goals and a certain methodological orientation that every research project regarding the teaching and educational function of school manuals should exhibit, explaining that its key component should be its focus on the communicative relationship of these books with the students who are their readers, the way that the latter use them and the frequency with which they use them.
