Περίληψη

The present paper aims to present and compare the structure and the logic of the current national curriculum for mathematics (2003) and the new curriculum for mathematics (2011) with regards to teaching statistics in the primary school. The analysis and the comparison of the two approaches presents us with the idea that teaching statistics earlier than the last three years of the primary school -as the current curriculum implies- can be effective. Even at the first grade of primary school, statistics can be taught given that its content is enriched (e.g., extension of the concept of probability through experiments). In addition, the new curriculum for mathematics builds on the concept of ‘learning trajectories’ and considers the potential of trajectories and progressions for supporting teachers’ understanding of young children’s statistical reasoning.
