Περίληψη

The role of teachers in the multicultural classrooms impose many challeng­es, from promoting integration of students with an immigrant background, to preparing every student for a harmonious and creative coexistence in a mod­ern multicultural society. In order for the teacher to cope with these challeng­es, he/she needs appropriate preparation during his/her initial education and the necessary in-service training. This brings up the question “what should be the content of teachers’ initial education or training programs so that teachers acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes to be effective in their work, in a het­erogeneous, multicultural environment?” This quantitative study is based on 708 records of a needs assesment survey, conducted among primary and sec­ondary education teachers.
