Περίληψη

The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of empathy of secondary school teachers in Greece and to examine to what extent gender, age and educational level are associated with teachers’ empathy. An additional objective was to examine the relation between teachers’ empathy and job satisfaction. The ultimate goal, of course, is to highlight the importance and necessity of empathy for educators and education in general.

The findings of this study are consistent with those of the existing research literature. It was found that secondary education teachers report satisfactory levels of empathy. Compared to men, women reported significantly higher levels of empathy. Age and educational level were not significantly related to teachers’ empathy. Finally, a statistically significant moderate positive correlation was found between teachers’ empathy and job satisfaction. These findings provide useful information for teachers’ training with the aim of promoting the development and use of empathy in the classroom and in the school community as a whole.
