Abstract

The present study aimed to assess the effect of age and sex on preschool chil¬dren’s phonological awareness. Three hundred children (154 boys and 146 girls) aged 61 to 72 months, were divided into two age subgroups (61-66 and 67-72 months) and were examined during four tasks: syllable segmentation, initial first letter sound identification, syllable deletion and phoneme deletion. Results showed a significant effect of age in phonological awareness, with the older children having better scores than younger, while sex was not signifi¬cantly related with it. The findings are discussed on the basis of cognitive and neurobiological theories of brain development and the different rates of cere¬bral maturation between the sexes.
