Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how video games are used and why children choose to play them. The research was based on a random sample of 255 schoolchildren from two age-groups, 11-12 and 14-15. The results of this study bring forward the extensive use of video games which become in integral part of a child's environment, particularly for boys. The two categories of video games for which children show a preference are games of action and adventure - fun-tasty. In video games children seek pleasure and entertainment, escape into an imaginary world, and relaxation, as well as active participation and the sense of superiority that derives from attaining their objective.
